The Active Inverter Technology developed by Fronius has a number of characteristics that give it an edge over other battery-charging technologies. There follows an explanation of the precise significance of these characteristics, and a discussion of some of the features of Active Inverter Technology.

Intelligent charging

The intelligent charging characteristics of the Active Inverter Technology can extend the service life of the battery.

The dU/dt technology actively adjusts the characteristic parameters to match the pre-programmed IUIoU charging characteristic. It detects the current charge status of the battery, which it is continuously monitoring and optimising. Once maximum values are reached, the charger is automatically switched over or switched off, thereby avoiding any unnecessary overcharging.

The digital control circuit keeps the charging current and voltage constant while charging. Any fluctuations in the mains voltage are compensated, and the battery is thus charged gently. The voltage drop on charging leads is also compensated – and charging time is reduced as a result.

Active Inverter Technology features a charging voltage with negligible residual ripple on the initial current (just a small number of AC current components that are superimposed on the DC current). The advantage: The battery heats up less and is charged more gently. Considerably less dirt accumulates on the surface.

The primary-switched-mode power electronics combined with the digital control circuit enable an excellent efficiency rating of up to 96% to be achieved. This is in a different league from the efficiency ratings achieved by conventional 50Hz chargers. The high level of efficiency results in a reduced power requirement, which in turn leads to lower energy costs. This means that the initial outlay for the battery charger is rapidly recouped.

Active Inverter Technology incorporates the latest, compact components, which considerably reduce the dimensions of these Fronius battery chargers. Smaller and lighter: the great power density of these units enables them to be deployed in flexible ways, saving valuable storage and operational space. They can also easily be wall-mounted.

Chargers for starter batteries

In addition to the product features described, which apply to both the Acctiva and Selectiva product ranges.

Especially when they are left unused for lengthy periods, starter batteries may become discharged. The special Refresh characteristic can be used to regenerate fully-discharged and sulphated batteries. This process is carried out by a microprocessor-controlled characteristic, and it improves the startability and the capacity of used batteries. The Refresh characteristic involves a controlled overcharging for a specified length of time; during this process the battery should be disconnected from the vehicle’s power supply.

A raft of features provides the highest possible degree of safety for personnel, the battery and the charger:

  • Electronically safe: The Acctiva product range is absolutely electronically safe and provides maximum safety for the electronic components in a vehicle. Electronically safe means that dangerous voltage peaks and sparking cannot occur whilst the charging leads are being connected to or disconnected from the battery.
  • Electronic reverse polarity protection: Acctiva units automatically detect whether the polarity is correct. If the clamps are inadvertently connected to the wrong terminals, nothing happens.
  • Overload and short-circuit protection: Total safety for both man and machine.

One feature of Acctiva battery chargers is that power continues to be supplied whilst diagnostic operations and software updates are being carried out in vehicles. This prevents a drop in the battery voltage, which may cause a misdiagnosis or abortion of a software update.

Consumers can draw power while the battery is being charged. The charger simply supplies the increased demand without overcharging.

The charger takes on the role of the battery during the replacement process. There is no need to re-enter the radio code, reprogram the engine management system or define any settings. 50Hz chargers essentially comprise a conventional 50Hz transformer which transforms the mains voltage into the charging voltage, and a rectifier that converts the AC voltage from the transformer into DC voltage.Since the mains voltage is transferred directly via the transformer, fluctuations in the mains voltage have a direct effect on the charging voltage.

The charging current responds in the opposite manner to the voltage in that when the voltage increases, the charging current drops.

Unregulated 50Hz battery chargers with a two-stage characteristic (generally known as WoWa chargers) differ from battery chargers with a single-stage characteristic (W or Wa) in that they switch over during the charging process.
